Didsbury welcomes Edinburgh Fringe Previews

Local comedy lovers can take advantage of some great bargains this summer as The Didsbury Comedy Club hosts two nights of full length Edinburgh Fringe Festival preview shows. Based at Didsbury Cricket Club on the first Sunday of the month a combination of some very funny comics, recession friendly prices and a relaxed informal setting have made the Wilmslow Rd venue a firm favourite for those who appreciate a good guffaw.

Sun 5th July sees two very different performers take to the stage - New York's Lewis Schaffer, a circuit favourite for many a year and a rising star of the future in Sheffield's Tom Wrigglesworth whose Edinburgh offering is based on an incident that found him making national headlines last year.

‘Lewis Schaffer has a unique style –
he can insult you and love you in the same sentence.’
Time Out New York

The fastest-talking and most highly-acclaimed middle aged New York Jewish comic living in Peckham returns to Edinburgh with biting political and social satire, shot through with personal trauma.

Lewis Schaffer is an American lured to the UK by his passion for a Scottish woman, then trapped here by an unexpected bond with his children. He isn’t an immigrant. He isn’t a tourist. He’s a hostage - stuck in a strange and alien land with emotions that he needs to deal with.

Lewis Schaffer is filled with hate. He hates women. He hates black people. He hates Jews. He hates you. Yes, you specifically. And – even more – he hates himself. Lewis Schaffer hates his hate: the hate has kept him from fame, fortune and love.

Lewis Schaffer’s quest is to join the great Black American comics – Chris Rock, Bill Cosby, and Richard Pryor - in the comedy pantheon. Is he black enough to succeed? Are you black enough to come along?

‘Fascinating… something interesting is clearly going on here.’ The London Evening Standard

‘A super-sized portion of harsh, angry, and downright offensive one-liners that just happen to be hilarious. Egotistical and vulnerable, almost at the same time.’ Chortle

‘Damn funny.’ The Fest

TOM WRIGGLESWORTH'S OPEN RETURN LETTER TO RICHARD BRANSON

Having witnessed a Virgin Train Manager abuse his position, (Hitler would've watched admiringly, taking notes), Tom writes to Richard Branson about a random act of kindness causing good to triumph over evil. The "SYTYF?" Winner and Chortle Nominee returns with a show about being proud, making a stand, and speaking French.

www.tomwrigglesworth.co.uk

‘COMEDY GIANT... DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BIG COMEDIANS OF THE FUTURE’ Time Out

‘IT’S A JOY TO WATCH AN HOUR AS ORIGINAL AND BEAUTIFULLY CRAFTED AS THIS ONE’ Scotsman

The fun takes place at Didsbury Cricket Club, Wilmslow Rd., Didsbury M20 2ZY at 7.45 prompt. Admission is £6 and £5 NUS. The show on Sun 5th July will also be the first and probably last opportunity to buy tickets for the Justin Moorhouse and John Bishop double bill on Sun 2nd August

Trof Go BBQ Hungry!

The Trof Summer BBQ
Every Saturday

During the summer months things tend to get a little quieter round Fallowfield, well not any more. Starting on the 20th June and continuing every Saturday all the way into September Trof Fallowfield has lined up a tasty selection of day time parties to take place on their trusty little terrace. Each week a different group of people are taking over, promoters, bands, DJs or friends of Trof, selecting the overall vibe of the day and organising music, bands and market stalls.

The people involved represent a decent cross section of the Manchester music scene with new Indie nights one hand to established Techno nights on the other. Not content with just good music the Trof chefs will be serving up high quality BBQ food, Seabass, Steak and a smorgasbord of veggie delights.

It all kicks off at 12pm with music till 1am, when you can retire home tired and refreshed, ready to do it all again the following Saturday.

Return of the Warehouse Project

The Warehouse Project returns for another 14 week barnstorming run beneath Piccadilly Train station. Just as it was three years ago when they opened those gates to Boddingtons, The Warehouse Project remains a big experiment. One that continues to evolve quite naturally... Never really knowing exactly how its going to turn out, there is nothing that has gone before that does it quite like this. For sure, its going to be another crazy three months in Manchester, with over 60,000 people flocking from around the country to attend these parties.

Season 3 of The Warehouse Project sees a return to Store Street for the final time. With plans for a new hotel and apartment block next door to the site, WHP will be unable to use this space in 2009. Who knows where the next part of the story will take them... in the meantime there’s some serious partying to be had!

“The programme for this years series is, we think, the best yet” says WHP co-founder Sam Kandel. “Its has been gradually pieced together since last October. This year there will be a second more intimate room of music, which has allowed us to go even deeper with the line-ups, putting on some really underground breaking talent in addition to the huge main room action you are used to. The preparation for the annual series has become a genuine labour of love for all involved - now everything is set its time to get moving... Welcome back to The Warehouse.”

Get tickets for this years Warehouse Project

Featuring a staggering 31 parties over 14 weeks the Warehouse Project is a veritable Dante’s Inferno of twisted disco, demonic drum n bass, tribal techno, cultured minimalism, heroic hip-hop, energised electro, underground indie, bass infused dub step and of course, heart-stopping house music all night long!

The carefully programmed nights bring together the best artists from all genres under one hedonistic roof! Featuring the likes of (deep breath) Sasha, Basement Jaxx, Dizzee Rascal, De La Soul, Roots Manuva, Tricky, Sven Vath, Reverend & the Makers, Squarepusher, Locodice, Marky, Goldie, The Whip, Simian Mobile Disco, Pete Tong, Deadmau5, Swedish House Mafia, Danny Howells, Magnetic Man, High Contrast. Richie Hawtin, Gilles Peterson, Erick Morillo, Annie Mac, Black Kids, Sinden, Jeff Mills, Hot Chip, Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip (Live), Justice, Ivan Smagghe, Optimo, Ar:Pi:Ar Sound System, John Digweed, Luciano, Jeru the Damaja, Wiley, Scratch Perverts, Flying Lotus, Benga, Plump DJs, James Zabeila, Erol Alkan, Hercules & Love Affair Live, Andy C, Hype, Stanton Warriors, Eric Prydz, Dusty Kid, Timo Maas, Squarepusher (Live), Boys Noize, Modeselektor, Mandy, Steve Lawler and Mancunian legends The Happy Mondays (Live) the Warehouse Project returns with an incredible final run to say ‘goodbye’ to Store Street in fine style.

So without further ado, feast your eyes on this lot and get the diary handy!

Sankeys featuring Steve Lawler

Although thus far the summer has been something of a wash out, the club voted 17th best in the world in DJmagazine can always be relied upon as a ray of sunshine in any clubber’s week. The cutting edge venue promises to delight with a programme of fresh and exciting nights lined up throughout August. Following the success of Friday favourites Defected In the House and Bugged Out in July, August promises more in the way of new house as well as some Mancunian favourites.:

August kicks of with the well established electro house club night, Electric Vendetta featuring a hand picked line-up of DJs including German DJ/Producer, Thomas Gold and Filthy Rich. The electronic vibe continues into August with Voodoo Circus, featuring Jesse Rose and Brodinski. August 22nd sees the start of popular Mancunian night Sequence residency. Famed for its techno beats, guest DJ Robert Hood looks set to bring some of his innovative minimal Detroit techno to this corner of Manchester. And, of course, Sankeys is delighted to welcome back one of clubland’s true greats – Steve Lawler – back in Manchester and back behind Sankeys’ decks.

With its reputation as the nocturnal haven for those seeking the best clubbing experience on a Friday in Manchester, Sankeys serves up the ultimate all-night option:

Manchester's Summer Festival

Summer is coming to Manchester....no, really.

Read more on Summer in the Park

The team behind the UK’s largest food and drink festival has a new challenge on their hands…they’re bringing a sumptuous summer to Manchester, in the form of a new festival that will celebrate everything that is excellent about food, drink and music in the region.

Summer in the Park is the first event of its kind, bringing together food, drink, and, (this being Manchester) music. Taking place 12th – 13th July in Platt Fields Park, Fallowfield (near the City Centre), the Festival will offer food, drink and music lovers two jam packed days filled with the best restaurants, chefs, food, drink and music that the region has to offer.

A veritable ‘food and drink concert’, the ‘headliners’ at this event will combine top chefs and musical talent. Split into designated areas, the Summer in the Park site will create a food and drink haven, each offering a fabulous experience:

Dine in the park: Manchester restaurant showcase

Up to 30 of Greater Manchester’s best restaurants and chefs will host their own kitchen stations serving sample portions, including Shimla Pinks, Tampopo, Carlcuccios, Chaophraya and Michael Caines Restaurants. This will bring attendees the chance try and buy a diversity of the cuisines available at Manchester’s restaurants in an affordable, relaxed Festival environment.

Learn in the Park: Cookery Theatre

For budding cooks and foodie enthusiasts, Learn in the Park is the ideal platform to pick up tips and hints from some of the UK’s leading chefs including Michael Caines and lots more to be announced. Learn in the Park will feature cookery demonstrations from the experts as well as talks, Q and As, celebrity book-signings and advice. More celebrity chefs will soon be announced.

Drink in the park: Real ale and wine village
Drink in the Park will provide a place to try and buy the region’s finest ales, and stunning wines with a local twist too!

Manchester Wine.
Manchester’s favourite independent bar ‘Odd’ will be bringing their inimitable style to the Festival, and transforming an area of the park into a wine Odd-yssey! This is attendees’ opportunity to try and buy new and old world wines, specially selected for Summer in the Park, and all with a local twist. Wine tastings will be hosted by experts throughout the weekend and a tasting table will be sampling hourly.
www.oddbar.co.uk
www.myspace.com/oddbarmanchester

Real ale
Meanwhile, a Greater Manchester Ale Bar will feature a huge showcase of the region’s brewers! Greater Manchester has the highest concentration of micro breweries in the UK, and Summer in the Park will celebrate this by allowing Festival-goers the chance to sample them all under one roof!
The summer beers showcase will be a one-off for real ale lovers, with all breweries in the region invited to take part, including Marble, Hydes, Phoenix, and Bank Top.

Produce in the park: Local producers market
The North West offers some of the best in regional produce, and no summer food festival would be complete without a regional producers market. Produce in the Park will enable festival revellers to sample and buy a fabulous and comprehensive range of regional produce to take home, as well as meet the producers themselves.

Interview: In Bed With Space' Smokin Jo Lawler

In Bed With Space returns at Sankeys, Manchester.

Buy Sankeys Tickets (WHLN is an official outlet for tickets to Sankeys events)

Interview with Smokin 'Jo'

I always like to start off an interview with a fun question, so this time I think we'll go for one relating to international hits. If you could pull a one off "hit" (as in a murder) on a politician or famous statesperson with absolutely no fear of reprisals… Who would you "hit"?

No-one, sorry but I don't believe in killing people, what a strange question.

You obviously get asked this question all the time, so it's hopefully one you'll have a pretty good answer for, obviously DJing is mainly a male profession so what did you have to do differently in the early days of your career to stand out against male DJs?

Yes I have been asked this a million times... yawn... ha ha... to be honest I didn't have to do anything differently; I just did what I loved doing and made sure I did it well. I guess I stood out because they were not many female dj's back then and the guys expected me to be shit and I wasn't so they took notice I guess. I would say it would be harder to stand out now as there are so many women behind the decks. I just don't know what the big deal is anyway you don't need a dick to dj!

You're a very good looking woman; you have a distinctive style and a beautiful smile. Who would I have to be to stand a chance of getting a date with you out on a midweek night, and how good would I have to be to stand a change of getting a kiss on the way home?

Thanks for the compliments but I have a boyfriend so I would not be going on a date with anyone I'm afraid.

Club Nude is the follow up to Nasty Dirty Sex Music, a night very popular with DSI’ers and clubbers, and we've read in an interview that you'd like it to be an "anything goes" kinda night… What kind of "anything goes" behaviour would you yourself most like to get involved in?

Anything goes means anything goes; wear what you want, do what you want, we encourage all types of people to come to our parties and express themselves in whatever way they choose. Some do come naked actually, naked guy has been to a few of our parties but also very flamboyantly dressed people too, our performers are the ones usually to crazy.

Again, with regards to your music you seem to play genres of music that some dance music fans have felt have fragmented the scene, such as deep house and the dirtier techno strains. What would you say to people who argue that too much fragmentation is ruining dance music?

I would say they are talking utter rubbish, deep house and techno were the first forms of "house" music anyway so how can that fragement the scene, I would say the need for some people to label music is where the confusion lies.

How did it feel to be the only female DJ to win DJ Magazine's DJ of the year award, and do you feel that the competition has now become meaningless with the internet orchestrated vote rigging and other scandals that seems to surround the competition?

It felt really good and a bit unreal at the time, I had only been dj-ing for 1 and half years so to win was amazing. The way the awards are organised now has changed it alot as you say, it is more like who can get all their mates to vote competition. I feel it is unrealistic to call it the Top Dj, as in who is the best, it should be the Most Popular Dj as usually alot of the best dj's are very low down or not even it in at all, trance dj's will always place higher as generally they play to bigger crowds and our more mainstream… maybe they should spilt the awards and have an underground scene award as well.

Do you think the internet has become an important part of dance music promotions? I can see you have a myspace profile for both yourself and club nude. I see you have an account for yourself on Dontstayin.com but it's not really been used that much. What do you think of the website, and what power do you think it can give to the dance music scene?

Yes it has and it's a great tool for reaching out to as many people as possible and a way to connect with clubbers. For Dj's and labels it has been and excellent way to get music quickly and cheaply and for promoters a easy paper free way to promote their nights. I love myspace as it's so easy to update and keep people aware of what you are doing. I can see what other people are up to and it's also fun as well. I was on DSI for a while but as we slowed down on our events I have not gone on as much as I used to. DSI is a great place for clubbers though, I think it's the way forward, it also give clubbers a voice.

Many people have said that the clubbing scene has progressed from an "us" culture to a "me" culture over the past 15 years with concepts such as peace, unity and respect being traded for more personally fulfilling ideals. What effect do you think this has had on the scene as a whole over that time period?

I am not sure about the whole ‘me’ thing? I think people still gather together to club as one and be around others. I would say drugs like Ketamine has had more of an effect on the scene than anything - the happy dancy vibe has been replaced with a room full of zombies , staggering around instead! It has also changed some of the music to cater for the Ketamine crowd, repetitive bleeps and noises over a beat… actually that kinda describes some of the tunes I play… ha ha… DOH!

You're playing the opening party for Space Ibiza at Sankey's in Manchester in the UK. I understand you've played for clubs in all four corners of the globe, so which club would you most like to play in again, and what kind of set would you play there?

I would like to play at Warung/Made in Brazil again as it is the most spectacular location by the beach and at the edge of the jungle. When the sun rises it comes through the huge glass windows making the place surreal, the crowd are gorgeous and clued up musically. I didn't play my best last time as I was jet lagged, tired form a 2 weeks tour and had food poisoning so I would like to go back and rock it properly with some deep melodic grooves.

In Bed With Space takes place this Sunday - get your hands on tickets at our Sankeys Tickets website.

Paradise Factory: Weekend Eighteen

As May ushers in its second bank holiday it’s an irregular weekend once more for the 112-116 behemoth. Eschewing the Friday night in favour of making the most of the elongated weekend and partying down on Sunday, they welcome back some of the firm favourites from earlier on in the year with two spellbinding gigs to whet the appetites of Mancunia’s club land observers.

Marine Parade return after their roadblock party in February for another stunning soiree. Once again Adam Freeland and Evil Nine head off proceedings, the two artists whose canny knack of surmising electro, acid house, techno and swaggering indie rock atop a clattering breakbeat undercurrent continues to hold them in adulation of ravers across the globe. Both have completed ridiculously well received compilations for well known brands in the last eighteen months, Freeland Global Underground and Evil Nine fabricLIVE, and are preparing for a summer crammed with Ibiza and festival dates. Joining them is Marine Parade’s bright new hope Alex Metic. Possessing an equally cunning lack of disregard for genres, Alex’s tune skirt electro, house, breaks and synth pop.

Then on Sunday the star of the opening weekend Steve Angello returns once more, this time with a showcase for his own imprint Size Records alongside German powerhouse Tom Novy. Despite being a measly 23 of age, Angello really has got the world at his fingertips, rapidly becoming one of house music’s biggest stars and one of the few acts who can balance the underground effortlessly with crossover appeal; check how his dance floors will be populated not only by a bevy of girls, but by men more eager to hear his sounds than goggle at his many admirers. Novy is equally as versatile, his recent compilation for Toolroom Knights demonstrating his far reaching appeal.

Krysko and Stereo Slut back them up for a perfect double-header.

The Warehouse Project Presents:
THE LOST WEEKENDS – Part 2

Warehouse Project Manchester | Warehouse Project Tickets

Saturday 3rd May - Cocoon at The Warehouse Project.

For many of us, the Cocoon event at last years Warehouse Project was
THE stand out night of the whole three months. A full house already high
on the excitement and anticipation of finally seeing Sven Vath back in
Manchester, fused with the hypnotic, tripped out techno to create an
atmosphere and vibe reminiscent of Cocoon's very own mega raves in
Ibiza and Frankfurt. In May we prepare to do it all again as we welcome
three of dance musics finest artistic talent to celebrate the first May Bank
Holiday.Cocoon style.

Ricardo Villalobos

One man party machine Ricardo Villalobos has been on our hit list for
sometime. The Chilean born DJ has an unbridled passion for music that
has seen him perform in all four corners of the globe and produce
countless tracks for seminal labels, Playhouse and Perlon. Last years
mixed reception to his Fabric mix took little away from the fact that he is
one of the few artists in the world able to release a high profile mix made
up entirely of his own compositions. Epic remixes of Shackleton's “Blood
On My Hands” and Depeche Mode's “Sinner in Me” offered proof if it were
needed, that Villalobos has very few peers when it comes to creating such
astonishing minimal techno.

Raresh

Raresh, alongside fellow Romanians Rhadoo and Petre Inspirescu,
emerged as one of the brightest young talents in minimal techno in 2007.
The trio's label Ar:pi:ar has been supported hugely by the likes of Ricardo
Villalobos, Luciano and Sven Vath with the warm, spaced-out house and
techno so characteristic of Raresh's own DJ sets. This will be the
Manchester debut of a man destined for bigger things in 2008 with slots
already lined up for the summer season with Circo Loco and Cocoon's
Ibiza residencies.

Josh Wink

Josh Wink returns to Manchester after a four year hiatus. DJ, remixer,
label owner and artist, Wink is another man who is held in such high
regard by fellow artists and dancefloor aficionado's alike. With a trademark
sound that straddles the gaps between house and techno and a string of
era defining releases (“Higher State of Consciousness” anyone?!), Josh
Wink remains a hugely inspirational force to many of today's electronic
artists.

Paradise Factory Manchester: Weekend Fourteen

More on the Paradise Factory, Manchester |
Cheap Paradise Factory Tickets

Once again 112-116 clutch a clubbing conglomerate for the weekend with an ear shredding assault.

Friday sees the return of Metropolis for their monthly residency with a staggeringly scary jungle onslaught, and Saturday sees more action from the crème de la crème of European house and techno stalwarts. Exceedingly good, as some cake aficionado would no doubt say.

Metropolis are certified heavyweights for the drum n bass scene in the north, and this line-up is typical of their unrelenting strength in the genre. Valve sound system bad boys Dillinja and Lemon D are in the house, the tag team who do grimy like no other. Simply the heaviest deebee on the planet, they’re speaker shredding status remains undimmed. Subfocus, the multi talented DJ/Producer who continues to wow crowds on the back of Andy C’s tutelage and Ram records endorsed finery joins Dutch powerhouses Noisia and the soulful don Nu:Tone, whilst Metropolis bring the sickness with their own Tonn piper and MC DRS.

One night later, it’s the turn of the brutality to shift unflinchingly from scattershot breakbeat led madness to the power slam of four four grooves. Swedish techno baron Adam Beyer is headlining, and a man completely at the cusp of the modern rave resurgence. His stripped back productions showcase a man constantly at the avant-garde of electronica’s latest experiments, bristling with powerful bass lines and evocative, cunning riffs. Someone else straddling the pinnacle is Jamie Jones, a figure shrouded in hype and more importantly enough talent to rise above it convincingly.

He’s joined by hector, the lynchpin of the UK’s most forward thinking vinyl emporium Phonica and a man possessing a glee ridden attachment to the nuances of jack’s groove.

Guilty Pleasures moves to Mint Lounge

Guilty Pleasures: A whole new world

Moving house is one of the most stressful things you can ever do. It starts of fairly well with a plan, lists, assigned boxes for relevant items etc, but then you get complacent and think “Yeah, I’ve got LOADS of time to do this, I’ll just have a sit down for a minute and watch this Danielle Steele film” and before you know it the removal men are there and you’re screaming round your house throwing shower gel, trainers and kettles into the same box as whatever is left in your food cupboard whilst wearing awful clothes and on the verge of tears. But despite all this, Guilty Pleasures is packing its bags and bidding a fond farewell to One Central Street before unpacking its pop records, Wham! posters and flexi discs in its new home at The Mint Lounge on Oldham Street on Friday, May 9th.

Arranging his ELO records chronologically on his brand new flat pack shelves will be Sean Rowley, playing his best pop party records ever, whilst Anna Greenwood circulates the vol-au-vents, drinking far too heavily before leading everyone in a conga around their new home, accidentally knocking the carriage clock off the mantelpiece.

Father Jesmond will be blessing the new home before taking your confessions in the booth and offering penance of Holy Vodka for all you sinners.

An addition to our spanking new home will be a separate room for soft rock and slowies, an ideal place for a quick snog or tops and fingers. It’s better than on top of a pile of coats in the back bedroom after all.

With still much more to be announced the unveiling of our all singing, all dancing new look Guilty Pleasures will be the BEST party in town. Well for this week at least.

Join us for a new dawn in our pop spectacular!

Launch night: Friday 9th May

Warehouse Project: Upcoming Events

Warehouse Project Manchester
Low price Warehouse Project Tickets available for all upcoming events.

Friday 11th April:
Ed Banger Records!
DJ Feadz, DJ Mehdi, Vicarious Bliss, Prostitutes + Policemen, V’s Sex With Robots

Just three weeks after ripping up our Easter Warehouse party along with SebastiAN, Busy P sends over three of his trusted party boys for another instalment of all things Ed Banger. DJ Feadz leaves Uffie popping her glock in Paris and is joined by DJ Medhi and Vicarious Bliss for a sonic onslaught of epic proportions.
Whist we probably aren’t supposed to have favourites in the office, we have to admit that we are really quite parshal to DJ Feadz. Having worked with the likes of Mr. Oizo early on in his career, Feadz has trailblazed his way through releases on uber cool Berlin label B-Pitch Control aswell as his mountain of work on Ed Banger. Keep an eye out for tracks off his ace new “Happy Meal” EP this Friday from a DJ with a truly unique style and sound.

Do you know what they call DJ Mehdi in France? They call him the “French Pharrel”. Why? Because he has that golden touch and whatever he makes, remixes or produces tends to be of top class quality. Through the years he’s worked with Daft Punk, MC Solaar, Chromeo, Cassius and Busy P on projects that have crossed genres and spanned a hundred copy cat attempts. Like Feadz, Mehdi is no slouch when it comes to spinning records so expect fireworks when the two get a rare chance to man the decks together.

Famed for his tune “Theme From Vicarious Bliss” (as played by everyone from 2ManyDJ’s to Dave Clarke) is a man very much in demand with Ladytron, N*E*R*D, and The Mystery Jets all calling upon his remix and production skills. Our tip for the Ed Banger artist most likely to breakthrough in 2008, Mr. Bliss plays bass heavy electro and heads up the support in the main room.
Vicarious Bliss Myspace:
http://www.myspace.com/myvicariousbliss
So there’s the low down. But then again you know what to expect from this lot by now…mad 80’s samples, electroid craziness, stabbing synths, a huge heap of wonkyness and a few hundred people going mental. Who said the French were boring?! See you down the front!

Don’t forget the loft…

Whilst the French do their thing in the main room, don’t forget to check out the loft. Two of Manchester’s premier electro collectives, Prostitutes & Policeman and Sex With Robots, battle it out for the whole night.

Saturday 12th April:
Derrick Carter + Carl Craig
Derrick Carter [ 5hr anything goes set ]
Carl Craig, Krysko, Greg Lord

One for lovers of all things Chicago and Detroit on Saturday 12th April as two of the most revered artists in modern day house and techno join up for a very special night. Derrick Carter has long been a favourite in these parts with epic, tequila soaked DJ sets trademarked by Carter’s unmistakable “boompty boomp” sound and jacked up Chicago beats. Expect something a little different this time around as Carter embarks on a five hour “anything goes” set likely to take in disco, funk, italo, acid and of course, Chicago house.

Perhaps more exciting is that whilst this goes on in the main room, Carl Craig takes control of the loft. Dancefloor experimentalist and top Detroit techno producer Carl Craig has few equals in terms of the artistry, influence, and diversity of his recordings. A key player in Detroit techno’s second wave, Carl Craig continues to wow through his soul infused productions and hugely influential Planet E label. His appearance in such an intimate and atmospheric space should provide one of the highlights of our short tenure of 112-116 Princess Street.

Five of the best Carl Craig productions and remixes:
Detroit Experiment – “Think Twice”
CC takes Donald Bryd’s jazz-funk classic, throws in some of the best jazz, funk and soul players that Detroit has to offer and comes up with this. Incredible Detroit house that builds and builds and makes dancefloors explode. A favorite a Manchester’s sadly departed Electric Chair.

Innerzone Orchestra – “Bug In A Bass Bin”.
Said to be CC most influential record. Primarily a techno – jazz track, jungle produces such as Goldie, Fabio and Grooverider picked up the record and began playing it at vastly greater speeds than the records was originally intended for. As a result, Drum N Bass was born.

Paperclip People – “Throw”.
A record played by generations of house and techno DJ’s drawn to a timeless record that combines drama, spontaneity and a little bit of craziness. Jumps out of modern DJ sets like a demented jack in the box and never fails to get a dance floor moving.
Incognito – “Out Of The Storm (C’s Planet E Special Mix)”
CC takes Incognito’s jazz – funk original and makes an epic down tempo record drenched in soul. Not a tune that your likely to hear in a club, this is said to be one of CC personal favorites as he takes a beautiful piece of music and adds an unmistakable Detroit twist.

Theo Parrish – “Falling Up (Carl Craig Remix)”
CC biggest tract of recent years and acclaimed by critics and dancefloors like. Described by CC himself as “a great experiment” the track came with very few parts meaning CC had to recreate virtually the entire record. In a word: Huge!

Northern Funk returns

RETURN OF N’ FUNK

From 1996 to 2006 Northern Funk was Manchester’s premier Friday function. Launched at the Attic nightclub as a spin off to our highly successful Funkademia nights before moving onto Subspace & Zumeba selling out all three venues every single Friday for 10 years.

When Zumeba was sold on in 2006 we thought it was probably right to put both Northern Funk & Funkademia to bed – 10 years is a long time in clubland. However if Alex Ferguson can change his mind about retiring so can we. We received several offers to re-launch our nights & the 1 Central St one proved too good to turn down thus Funkademia came back to life in 2007. We’ve now decided to re-launch N-Funk for a number of reasons:

• the re-launch of our Funkademia night last year at 1 Central Street has proved a massive success & we are turning crowds of people away each week
• the recent rival of the original soul sound through contemporary artists like Duffy, Amy Winehouse, Gnarls Barclay, Sam Sparro etc, and probably most importantly,
• because of the number of requests we get from our 18,000 Funkademia \ Northern Funk members to bring it back

To satisfy these requests and test the water we did a one off Northern Funk night over Christmas which was rammed & a cracking night. We knew then the time was right to dust down the old vinyl & go for it again.

The re-launch date is Friday 25th April and Northern Funk will take place every Friday thereafter at 1 Central Street nightclub. Anchoring the decks will be DJ’s Fritz Great Lakes & Myk Nolan, providing suitable support will be the rest of the Funkademia DJ team Trafford Lovething, Jason Vereker, Good For the Soul, Payney, Dave Booth & Jon Busstop.

There will be a new twist to N-Funk this time though. Breaking with our format of uniquely pre ’79 soulfunk we will be mixing in the contemporary new artists whose inspiration derives from original soul. Hence expect to hear a playlist which could feature Marvin Gaye mixed with Duffy mixed with Aretha mixed with Gnarls Barclay mixed with Herbie Hancock mixed with Stettsasonic mixed with Issac Hayes mixed with Amy Winehouse …….I’m sure you get the drift.

Hope this explains everything. Any exposure you could provide would be much appreciated. For further information or guest list facilities contact the promotion team on :

Last Ten Week of Paradise Factory: Tickets and DJ Lineups

Tickets for the Paradise Factory | More on the Paradise Factory Manchester

It doesn’t seem like so long ago when news of a new club in Manchester began to spread in late 2007, and once the festive season had passed firm details came to light: a piece of history was in the making in Manchester.

The team behind the hugely successful Warehouse Project had plans for a smaller, more intimate rave space, and the location was one steeped richly in history, the epicentre of a Mancunian musical movement and foundation for music of the early club music which spread across the UK: The Paradise Factory. Base of the legendary, inspirational and now sadly passed away Tony Wilson, it seemed almost audacious to use such a hallowed venue, one which had never really witnessed the success of years ago. But after months of planning the guys knew they had something special up their sleeves.

Sacha Lord-Marchionne, one of the club’s promoters, says that, “It’s been great. It’s obviously a lot more intimate than the Warehouse Project, so we get to spend more time with people and old faces. The crowd have loved it, week in, week out...and on a personal level, I’m delighted that every student night has sold out. That’s where I started 13 years go so I’ve proved to myself that the old dog still has it in him! You can see how good it’s been good for Manchester. We woke up an old favourite in The Factory offices. After the Warehouse, it was the first opportunity for clubbers to get close to their favourite DJ's again. They have embraced it. The designer, Paul Astill, was a huge Factory fan and has managed to keep the theme running throughout.”

So now, at the mid-way juncture of 112-116’s first season, there has been so much to choose from. Kicking off from Laurent Garnier’s curtain raiser through to a who’s who at the cusp of electronic music – Skream, Steve Angello, Sinden and Herve, Basement Jaxx, Andy C, Surgeon, Rob Hood, Theo Parrish, Switch, Boxcutter, Magnetic Man, Benga, Zabeila, Alexander Robotnick and Andrew Weatherall barely scratching the surface of what has passed – and there’s so much more to come.

Without doubt 112-116 has targeted the underground, balancing Friday and Saturday sessions by reaching out to talent from far and wide, whilst blessed with great residents and help from local parties who have all brought something extra to Princess Street.

So the first 10 weeks have flown by in a noisy blur, one which has drawn crowds from all over the UK and beyond to experience some of the best aural action the UK has to offer. And with the last ten weekends looming, what else is there to look forwards to?

Of any surprises Sacha cryptically says, “Watch this space, but I’ll have a huge hangover after the closing weekend!”

Below shows some of what’s coming up over the last ten weekends…

Urbis goes Green Fingered

Urban gardening brings outside in
New exhibition at Urbis, Manchester from April 26 to September 7 2008

Possibly Britain’s finest contribution to the visual arts and certainly the most absorbing of British pastimes, gardening is the subject of a brand new exhibition at Urbis, opening on April 26. From the neglected back alley to the high rise towerblock, the exhibition will show how green fingers and green thinking can help transform city spaces into urban oases.

This fun new exhibition is an original family show dedicated to putting a breath of fresh air into towns and cities. With zones that show how to create gardens in the city from the smallest possible Juliet balcony to the transformation of a whole street or roof with greenery.

Contemporary topics featured will include ‘guerilla’ gardeners and ‘seed bombers’ (people who take patches of urban land into their own hands to make it better); lazy gardening for someone with no time or little inclination; workshops about how to green your roof and about creating animal habitats to encourage biodiversity, including little havens for ladybirds, bees and worms.

The exhibition includes gardening for domestic spaces including:
Living room – with a hanging garden; latest designs for self-watering pots from Vitamin Design. Also features a ‘top 5’ list of plants that offer health benefits.
Kitchen – a fitted kitchen with drawers and cupboards planted with a hydroponic indoor garden. Interesting solutions to composting, including home wormeries, and tips on good plants to keep in the kitchen will be available alongside inspirational and quirky products such as a dish drainer by Erdemselek where wet dishes drip into a plant below.

International examples of urban gardening from Seoul and Saigon, as well as closer to home in Manchester, will show the exciting ways that greenery is making a splash in contrast with urban greys.

Derelict areas are given their own space in the exhibition emphasizing the importance of brownfield sites as habitats for bugs in the city and inviting visitors to take a walk on the wilder side of city life.

Rapidly becoming the latest must-have accessory for the urbanite, the benefits of cultivating an allotment will be on show, inside one of Pennine Lancashire’s Chic Sheds. Information will be made available showing the easiest vegetables to grow in the city (beans come out on top, with cut-and-come-again lettuce, peppers, potatoes, shallots, sorrel, spinach and tomatoes).

There will be workshops for adults and for children with experts on hand to give general gardening tips as well as tips on how to be green with a capital ‘G’. Experts will offer views of how towns and cities will look in the future and how gardens and wildlife will creep into concrete landscapes. The impact of climate change and issues of sustainability will run through the exhibition, tackling the effects of urban sprawl on the ecology of our cities.

Italian Job minis come to Manc

THE WORLD’S ONLY COMPLETE SET OF 3 ORIGINAL REPLICA MINIS
[from The Italian Job]
TRAVEL TO MANCHESTER

Sky Movie Celebrates The Italian Job’s World Premiere in HD,
‘Michael Caine Season,’ and Sir Michael Caine’s75th Birthday

The world’s only complete set of original replica Minis from The Italian Job will be in Manchester on Tuesday, March 4th as part of a national tour to celebrate Sir Michael Caine’s 75th birthday, the The Italian Job’s world premiere in HD and the ‘Caine Season’ on Sky Movies.

These lovingly restored red, blue and white classics will tour through Glasgow, stopping at iconic locations throughout the city, escorting residents about town with complementary rides and being available to The Italian Job enthusiasts are drivers to answer questions.

Matthew Field, author of The Making of The Italian Job and director of Paramount’s Home Entertainment three-part documentary said, “these lovingly restored Italian Job replica Minis are the only known to exist in the world. The attention to detail is exceptional - right down to the correct licence plate numbers!"

From Sunday, March 9th for a week on Sky Movies, “The Caine Season – from Alfie to Zulu” will showcase 10 of the British legend’s finest films and include the HD world premieres of The Italian Job (March 16th) and Zulu (March 9th). The tribute is supplemented by a specially commissioned in-depth 30 minute programme looking at his career.

Sir Michael Caine said, “It’s fantastic that The Italian Job and Zulu are being remastered... I love HD, it’s so difficult to watch anything else once you’ve watched it in HD. Of course it’s very unforgiving, especially on young beautiful ladies, but thank god I’m old, I don’t care.”

Ian Lewis, Director of Sky Movies and Sky Box Office, said, “We felt that it was appropriate to celebrate the 75th birthday of one of Britain’s finest screen actors by making Zulu and The Italian Job available to Sky HD subscribers. Touring the complete set of original replica minis is a great way to celebrate our commitment to the ‘Caine Season’ and what we’ve done to two of his iconic films.”

“Watching a classic title re-mastered in HD is like viewing a restored painting. The experience is deeper, more immersive and ultimately far more satisfying. Yet we found that many great classic films, particularly British titles, are still to be re-mastered. These films are a part of our cultural heritage and it’s vital that they are made available to be seen in the best possible format,” said Lewis.

The Italian Job, starring Sir Michael Caine and Noel Coward, takes us on the nostalgic journey around Charlie Croker’s (Michael Caine) attempt to stage a gold bullion robbery in Turin, to be achieved by sabotaging the city's traffic-control computer and escaping in nippy mini getaway cars along a carefully planned route throughout Turin and London. Originally released in 1969, The Italian Job has been continually heralded as one of the most iconic films in British cinematic history.

Warehouse Project Easter: Artist Profiles

The Warehouse Project Presents:
THE LOST WEEKENDS - Part 1
Easter Bank Holiday Weekend,
Friday 21st
Easter. A time for peaceful reflection and quiet celebration. A time for family outings and chocolate eggs…Well, that’s all very well and good but what about the raving?! What about getting together with a bunch of your best mates, hearing some of the finest electronic bands out there and raving all-night long?! Forget the egg’s, tell your mum you’ll see her on Easter Sunday and join us as Ed Banger, Modular and Kitsune present a line up to really get eggcited about…couldn’t help it.

The Presets [ Live ]

Aussie duo The Presets are one of those acts that defy categorization. Taking in electro, pop, punk funk, swirling synths and screaming guitars typified by their debut album Beams, The Presets are the jewell in the Modular crown. Expect a chaotic, experimental, sweat drenched live show that’ll leave you beaming from ear to ear and screaming for more.
- The Presets : My People
- Myspace

The Whip [ Live ]

Descibed by Mixmag (and just about everyone else) as brilliant, The Whip took 2007 by storm. Like watching some sort of super group made up of The Klaxons, The Rapture, Kraftwerk and Justice, their kaleidoscope of sounds remain instantly recognisable and rock dancefloors from the biggest super club to the smallest indie disco. Forget Madchester, this is the sound of Manchester 2008.
- The Whip : Sister Siam
- Myspace

Ladyhawke [ Live ]

A relative newcomer to the Modular stable and our tip for 2008, Ladyhawke fuses retro influences (think classic rock, 80’s dance and a smattering of disco) with a voice like a bastardised Chrissy Hind (ask your Mum). Check out tracks like “Paris is Burning” and “Back of the Van” and you’ll see what we mean.
- Myspace : Ladyhawke
- Myspace : Modular

Felix Da Housecat
20 years after he first stepped into the studio and 6 years since he teamed up with Miss Kitten on seminal electro tune “Silver Screen (Shower Scene), Felix Da Housecat remains one of the most in demand DJ’s on the planet. From his early Chicago house beginnings to single-handedly spear heading the electro-clash movement, catch the man who has influenced so many at his biggest Manchester show to date.
- Felix Da Housecat : Silver Screen [ Shower Scene ]
- Myspace

Busy P

DJ, producer, band manager, record label boss and remixer extraordinaire …Is there anything Busy P can’t do?! When it comes to dance music in France, this guy is THE man! Daft Punks tour DJ and the man behind Ed Banger records and comes to the WHP for a rare Manchester appearance. Trust us, he’s very, very good. Oh, and he’s bringing a friend.
- Myspace : Busy P
- Myspace : Edbanger Records

SebastiAN

If The Whip were the band of 2007, then SebastiAN was the DJ of 2007. 2006’s brilliant Ross Ross Ross EP brought Sebastian to the attention of the dancefloor masses which lead to a string of high profile remixes. Bloc Party, The Rapture, The Klaxons and Rage Against The Machine all received the SebastiAN treatment to high acclaim. Indeed, there are few artists who can claim to push a sound as unique as SebastiAN.
- Sebastian & Busy P, Daft Punk After Party : NYC
- Myspace

Damian Lazarus
Another DJ with a killer record label completes the Good Friday line up. Damian is truly a globe trotting DJ with a world wide pedigree for delivering the best in underground techno, house and electro. His Crosstown Rebels label showcases some of the most forward thinking dance music in Europe from the likes of Dinky, Pier Bucci and Jamie Jones.

New Trof: The Deaf Institute

Head down to the old Adult Deaf and Dumb Institute on Grosvenor Street and marvel at what a fantastic place it has become now Trof has moved in and done a bit of decorating.

Deaf Institute

With 3 floors -
an exclusive basement bar,
a large ground floor cafe by day serving all the old favourites and bar by night with the best DJs in town, sun/smoking terraces,
PLUS a dedicated music hall on the 1st floor.
There will be live bands, exclusive gigs, DJs, acts of all descriptions and all manner of stuff every night.

Phew, exciting stuff.....

Following a meeting on Monday 24th February with Noel Traynor, Chief Executive Officer of the Manchester Deaf Centre and other members of his team, we would like to confirm that our new bar will not be called Deaf & Dumb. We had used Deaf and Dumb as an abbreviation of this historic buildings title, which is engraved on the facade of the building, and were not intending to cause offence with the use of these words. We apologise to those we have offended. Some printed literature has gone out bearing the words Deaf and Dumb, and that was also the name of the myspace, and facebook internet sites. The printed literature has been withdrawn where possible, and the names of the myspace & facebook sites have been changed.
Once again we would like to extend our apologies for any offence caused.
