Local comedy lovers can take advantage of some great bargains this summer as The Didsbury Comedy Club hosts two nights of full length Edinburgh Fringe Festival preview shows. Based at Didsbury Cricket Club on the first Sunday of the month a combination of some very funny comics, recession friendly prices and a relaxed informal setting have made the Wilmslow Rd venue a firm favourite for those who appreciate a good guffaw.
Sun 5th July sees two very different performers take to the stage - New York's Lewis Schaffer, a circuit favourite for many a year and a rising star of the future in Sheffield's Tom Wrigglesworth whose Edinburgh offering is based on an incident that found him making national headlines last year.
‘Lewis Schaffer has a unique style –
he can insult you and love you in the same sentence.’
Time Out New York
The fastest-talking and most highly-acclaimed middle aged New York Jewish comic living in Peckham returns to Edinburgh with biting political and social satire, shot through with personal trauma.
Lewis Schaffer is an American lured to the UK by his passion for a Scottish woman, then trapped here by an unexpected bond with his children. He isn’t an immigrant. He isn’t a tourist. He’s a hostage - stuck in a strange and alien land with emotions that he needs to deal with.
Lewis Schaffer is filled with hate. He hates women. He hates black people. He hates Jews. He hates you. Yes, you specifically. And – even more – he hates himself. Lewis Schaffer hates his hate: the hate has kept him from fame, fortune and love.
Lewis Schaffer’s quest is to join the great Black American comics – Chris Rock, Bill Cosby, and Richard Pryor - in the comedy pantheon. Is he black enough to succeed? Are you black enough to come along?
‘Fascinating… something interesting is clearly going on here.’ The London Evening Standard
‘A super-sized portion of harsh, angry, and downright offensive one-liners that just happen to be hilarious. Egotistical and vulnerable, almost at the same time.’ Chortle
‘Damn funny.’ The Fest
TOM WRIGGLESWORTH'S OPEN RETURN LETTER TO RICHARD BRANSON
Having witnessed a Virgin Train Manager abuse his position, (Hitler would've watched admiringly, taking notes), Tom writes to Richard Branson about a random act of kindness causing good to triumph over evil. The "SYTYF?" Winner and Chortle Nominee returns with a show about being proud, making a stand, and speaking French.

‘COMEDY GIANT... DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BIG COMEDIANS OF THE FUTURE’ Time Out
‘IT’S A JOY TO WATCH AN HOUR AS ORIGINAL AND BEAUTIFULLY CRAFTED AS THIS ONE’ Scotsman
The fun takes place at Didsbury Cricket Club, Wilmslow Rd., Didsbury M20 2ZY at 7.45 prompt. Admission is £6 and £5 NUS. The show on Sun 5th July will also be the first and probably last opportunity to buy tickets for the Justin Moorhouse and John Bishop double bill on Sun 2nd August
