Murkage search for new sound stars

Murkage are the buzz night in Manchester right now - the Evening News crowned them Most Exciting Club Night of 2010 and they're uber groovy - parties at the club South, there's also a live band and there are other off-shoots as well. They're always pushing the envelope for creativity in Manchester and their latest push is to find an audio identity - the "Murkage Sound".

SO! Launching this week (and running till May 8th) will be a competition to find the Murkage sound - an ident that will define the club. Producers/fans/amatueurs/sound students... escaped lunatics... everyone will be invited to visit www.murkagesound.com and download stems from their first EP (already getting heavy plays by Kissy Sell Out and MistaJam et al) and turn that into their 30 second sound bite - any genre, any vibe, any sort of murky murkage!

Entrants will all be listened to and ultimately judged by the Murkage Cartel. There will be one ultimate winner and they will win a bunch of stuff (including a SONY VAIO laptop, preloaded with an audio production suite not even on the market yet plus WeSC headphones and clothes).

Award winning stand up comic and writer Tony Burgess plays clubs and theatres throughout the country.

In 2004 Tony Burgess was nominated for best stand up and writer at the North West Comedy awards. This led to a prolific period of writing on a wide range of shows such as the award winning BBC 3 comedy Ideal (where he also played Troy, a mad DJ who lived in Moz’s cupboard) to the play Doorway, which premiered at The Royal Exchange Studio Theatre in Manchester, to the film Wallace and Gromit and The Curse Of The Were-rabbit. Tony has also written for wide variety of comedians including Lily Savage, Brian Conley, Steve Coogan (Paul and Pauline Calf’s Cheese and Ham Sandwich) and Johnny Vegas.

Up and coming Anglo-Asian stand up comedian Alex Maple gigs throughout the UK using one-liners, jokes and wordplay as well as acute observations drawn from his English-Islamic upbringing. He has written for BBC and commercial radio and worked on TV programmes such as BBC 2's 'Mock The Week'.

PAM ANN TO DESCEND ON MANCHESTER PRIDE 2010 DINNER

With just one week to go until the Manchester Pride Dinner the organisers are pleased to announce that Australian comedienne and gay icon, Pam Ann, will be touching down at The Palace Hotel, on Thursday 23 September 2010.

Pam Ann will be joining forces with Irish TV personality Graham Norton, who is set to host the evening of music and entertainment.

This charity event, in conjunction with Hot Village magazine, will help to raise funds to support community events at Manchester Pride 2011.

There is a limited number of Silver Tickets available, at a cost of £55, which includes a drinks reception and a three-course meal. Tickets do not need to be purchased for an entire table as individual bookings are welcome.

MANCHESTER PRIDE UP FOR 'WORLD'S BEST PRIDE' AWARD

Manchester Pride has been nominated for the 'Best Annual Gay Destination Event' in the 2010 TripOut Gay Travel Awards.

Other nominees include: Amsterdam Gay Pride, Dinah Shore Weekend (Palm Springs), Madrid Pride, Provincetown Bear Week and Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

The shortlist has been compiled by TripOut Gay Travel - an international online gay travel guide. TripOut provide LGBT travelers with the latest on gay travel and honour gay-friendly destinations and travel services around the globe.

You can vote for Manchester Pride by visiting: www.tripoutgaytravel.com, or via Twitter by tweeting the hashtage #TOGTManPride. Any time this hashtag is used in a tweet, it is counted as a vote.

Voting closes on Monday, 18 October and the results will be announced in November.

Didsbury Irish Festival a Success

Sun Shines for Full Irish Festival in Didsbury

The Sun shone all afternoon to welcome back the legendary Full Irish Radio Festival to Old Bedians Sports Ground in Didsbury on Sunday 29^th August 2010.

Thousands flocked to the annual Bank holiday family orientated Irish fun day which this year was officially launched by Withington MP John Leech. In his opening address at the outdoor event the popular MP said “It is great to see the return of this popular Family orientated Irish festival to Didsbury. ALL FM Radio’s Full Irish Radio Team have worked very hard to put on such a fantastic event and I am delighted to come along to support it. I hope that the annual celebration of all things Irish will remain at permanent fixture here for years to come.”

The annual event which is organised by Joe Casserley and his team of volunteers from the award winning Full Irish Radio show on ALL FM Radio is a celebration of all things Irish. The Day at the Sports Ground in Didsbury featured a host of Live Irish Bands who had flown over from Ireland to play on a specially erected outdoor stage, Children’s Gaelic Games competitions, Dancing displays, Irish Stalls and a massive Children’s Fun Fair.

SIR IAN MCKELLEN TO TAKE PART IN MANCHESTER PRIDE PARADE 2010
Lord of the Rings star, Sir Ian McKellen will be this year’s official Grand Marshal for the 20th annual Manchester Pride Parade, to be held this Saturday (28 August, 1pm).

A Grand Marshal is a distinguished individual honoured with leading the parade. Last year’s Grand Marshal was human rights campaigner, Peter Tatchell.
This year’s parade has adopted a ‘through the decades’ theme.
Jackie Crozier, festival director of Manchester Pride, said: “Every Parade needs a Grand Marshal and I’m absolutely delighted that we have the wonderful Sir Ian McKellen leading the way. The parade always attracts a huge crowd so I would advise everyone to get there early to avoid disappointment.”
With over 100 entries each year, the Manchester Pride Parade is one of the main highlights of the Big Weekend and remains the biggest parade in the city. It celebrates the LGBT community in Greater Manchester and raises awareness of the issues around HIV.

CNYD present the first in a series of events celebrating the musical output of the three American cities arguably most influential in the birth and development of dance music as it stands today; Chicago, New York and Detroit. Manchester venues Sound Control and The Attic combine to host performances from an exciting line-up of DJs and live performers from each city.

C is for Chicago:

The progression of disco music, through the incorporation of synthesized beats and electronic music from Europe in the Chicago clubs of the 80s sparked the creation of a completely fresh and raw musical genre: House music. Taking its name from the city's famed Warehouse club House mutated further into the sub genres of Acid and Jackin' and beyond. Representing the music of Chicago are legendary performer Robert Owens of Fingers Inc and fresh new DJ/Producer Tevo Howard.

Robert Owens' voice is one of the most recognisable in House Music. His collaborations with Larry Heard as Fingers Inc, such as Bring Down the Walls and I'm Strong back in 1986 - 1987 and later with Frankie Knuckles and Satoshi Tomiie's epic Tears are timeless classics. Robert is still prolifically involved in new house music after 24 years in the business and is set to perform a selection of his best songs as well as a rare DJ set.

Tevo Howard is an exciting prospect who has recently burst onto the scene with a slew of awesome releases which encapsulate the raw spirit of Chicago House. Chicago's hottest new export brings a slice of his city to Manchester with a unique live set featuring analog drum machines and plenty of reasons to jack.

NY is for New York:

From the block parties of the South Bronx to the ground breaking nightclubs of Manhattan and Jersey, New York gave us Hip Hop, Disco and the Soulful Garage sounds of the 1990s. This heady mix of styles, tempos and cultures make the city's musical output one of the most influential and important on the planet. Representing New York are the residents from the city's biggest and most established club nights, Danny Krivit (718 Sessions and Body & Soul), and Timmy Regisford (Shelter).

Danny Krivit was a regular at seminal NYC clubs such as the Loft, the Paradise Garage and the Gallery, forging friendships with influential and now legendary DJs Larry Levan, David Mancuso, Francois K, Nicky Siano and other such pioneers of dance music. He's been DJ'ing worldwide ever since and still does it better than most.

Timmy Regisford has earned the well deserved moniker of the Maestro in New York because of his marathon sets at one of the cities longest running and most revered nights; Shelter. As well as a DJ career spanning over 25 years, he's also held down A&R roles at Atlantic, Motown and Dreamworks.

D is for Detroit

In the late 80s in America's most industrial city and the home of Motown records, soul music met technological experimentation and Techno music was created. From the earliest sonic innovations using the famous synthesizers and drum machines of that era, the motor city's underground music provided the basis for today's proliferation of electronic dance music across the globe. Representing Detroit are two of its finest producers and DJs, Stacey Pullen and Rolando.

Stacey Pullen is an innovator from the Second Wave of Detroit techno who grew up under the mentorship of Detroit's legendary three: Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson. He's been DJ'ing since 1985 and is still producing the finest techno and playing across the globe to this day.

Rolando grew up in the 1970's in the Hispanic District in southwest Detroit, where he was heavily influenced by his cultural Latin rhythms and percussion. This influence is prominent in his ground breaking techno records such as Knights of the Jaguar which turned perceptions of techno on their head.

Chicago:NewYork:Detroit takes place at two of Manchester's finest and most respected underground clubs, situated side-by-side under the railway arches of New Wakefield Street. The stage is set for the meeting of underground dance music's finest minds. CNYD part one. Manchester 27/08//2010

Venus started life as Manchester’s best loved night out, fulfilling the promoter’s mantra that it’s all about quality, rather than quantity. After a decade in Manchester, the team behind Venus took the brave step to open their very own nightclub.Venus opened at the beginning of 2010 with a fanfare of disco funk and quickly found a home in the very heart of Manchester’s clubscene.

HOW CAMP IS YOUR DOG?

Manchester Pride is pleased to announce the return of The Pink Dog Show which will be held on Sunday 22 August, in Sackville Gardens between 2pm and 5pm.

This year the event has adopted a ‘Land of Oz’ theme.

Presented by Barking Barbers and the Manchester Dogs Home, categories within the show include; Campest Dog, Most Handsome Butch, Best Dressed and Sassiest Walk, as well as prizes for Best in Show and the honour of being crowned doggy King or Queen.

The organisers are encouraging people to come along and watch for free, or enter their dog for just £1- registration opens at 1pm on the day. All entrants will receive doggy bags, and reiki therapy, nutritional advice and free chipping will be offered. For more information visit: pinkdogshow.co.uk

ONE FOR THE GIRLS AT MANCHESTER PRIDE

With less than one month to go before Manchester Pride begins on 20 August, the programme of women’s events is really starting to hot up.
The women's events are as follows:
The Modern Lesbian, held at 52 Princess Street, Friday 20 August – Sunday 5 September 2010, 12pm – 6pm. This latest body of work from photographer Rachel Adams presents a new series of portraits and audio works that explore the stories of influential gay and bisexual women.
Living Library, held at The Pankhurst Centre, Friday 20 August 2010, 10am – 1pm. This event will be preceded by six workshops, where women will design book covers to be used in the library.
Self Defence for Women, held at YMCA Liverpool Road, Saturday 21 August 2010, 2-5pm. This workshop will cover several key areas of self defence including visual and physical awareness, being grabbed or lifted, and being taken down to the ground.
If These Walls Could Talk, held at The Lesbian and Gay Foundation (LGF), Monday 23 August 2010, 6pm. The LGF are creating a postcard book, full of lesbian and bisexual women’s secrets.
Fanny the Nun, held at Vanilla Bar, Wednesday 25 August 2010, 8pm. This comedy play looks at the adventures of Fanny the Nun who escapes from her Irish convent and moves to Manchester with Sister Phil. It is here that they discover the gay village.

KELIS BRINGS HER MILKSHAKE TO MANCHESTER PRIDE

US chart topper Kelis is the final big name signed-up to appear at the Manchester Pride festival next month.

The Brit award-winner and twice Grammy nominated Milkshake and Acapella singer will headline the Sunday night (29 August) of the Big Weekend celebrations.

The set will include her new single ‘4th of July (Fireworks)’ from the upcoming album, Flesh Tone.

Pop duo, Diagram Of The Heart, who have just supported the Scissor Sisters at Manchester Apollo, and an ensemble from the Channel 5 show Don’t Stop Believing are also announced today as new additions to the main stage line-up.

Jackie Crozier, festival director of Manchester Pride, said: “The main stage entertainment is all about letting your hair down and having a good time. Kelis has had some amazing hits over the years and will, no doubt, really get the crowd going.

“I think it’s safe to say this is going to be a Big Weekend to remember!”

Other acts confirmed to perform include: Chicane, Beverley Knight, Belinda Carlise, Dragonette, Liz McClarnon, Starman from Pineapple Studios, Same Difference, Adam Rickett, Rowetta and Heaven 17.

The Big Weekend takes place between Friday 27 and Monday 30 August. Tickets are priced £17.50 and can be purchased at www.manchesterpride.com or at various venues across the city.

Mini Irish Festival in Levenshulme for August Bank Holiday

South Manchester to turn Green for August Bank holiday

This coming August Bank holiday South Manchester will be turning Green when a host of pubs and venues in the area join forces to stage a mini Irish Festival from Friday 27 August to Sunday 29 August. Special Irish events are being held in the Union, Hennigans Sports Bar and M19 in Levenshulme village along with The Farmers Arms and The Oasis Music Bar in Burnage.

Highlights include a special Irish night dedicated to Bob Dylan’s Irish roots at m19 bar o Friday 27 August. The night will feature eight acts from all over the UK and Ireland paying tribute to Dylan’s back catalogue of Irish inspired tunes which were influenced by his time spent with the Clancy brothers and Tommy Makem in New York. On the same night the Union will host a special Irish Karaoke special with Irish DJ Ronnie. On Saturday 28 August Irish singer songwriter and TV actor Kieran Cunningham along with his band Quare Craic will stage a special Irish concert at the Union in Levenshulme. On the same night The Farmers Arms in Burnage will play host to Irish Country star ‘Gerry Flanagan’ who is staging a special warm up gig at the pub before he plays the Full Irish Festival the next day. While over at Hennigans Sports Bar the venue is screening live GAA Games and Celtic games all weekend.

Popular Levenshulme Irish Councillor John Commons said “I always look forward to this mini Irish Festival during the August Bank holiday, it’s a taster for our forthcoming Levenshulme village community festival in October and the city’s Irish Festival in March. It is great how it coincides with Levenshulme’s ‘Full Irish Radio Festival Day’ which this year is being staged at Old Bedians in Didsbury on Sunday 29 August. It is a very popular weekend and a great way to meet up with friends old and new.”

CHICANE BRING THE SUMMER VIBE TO MANCHESTER PRIDE 2010

Electronic dance act Chicane has been confirmed to perform live at Manchester Pride’s Big Weekend 2010 (Friday 27 – Monday 30 August).

Masterminded by producer Nick Bracegirdle, Chicane is well known for Ibiza anthems and chill-out classics such as: 'Offshore', ' Saltwater'’, 'Don't Give Up' featuring Bryan Adams and ‘Stoned in Love’ featuring Tom Jones.

Chicane will be joining other acts including: Beverley Knight, Belinda Carlise, Liz McClarnon, Dragonette, Same Difference, Adam Rickett, Rowetta, Starman from Pineapple Dance Studios and Heaven 17, who will be celebrating their 30th anniversary.

Others acts to join them include: May68, The Sticks, Sam Gray, Four Poofs & a Piano, Heather Peace, Daniel Fox, Valentino King, Ellis, Horse, Rosie Legosi, Jonathan Mayor, Kelly Wilde and Ikenna.

GOMEZ
Gomez are an English indie rock band from Southport, comprising Ian Ball (vocals, guitar), Paul "Blackie" Blackburn (bass), Tom Gray (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Ben Ottewell (vocals, guitars) and Olly Peacock (drums, synths, computers). The band are distinct in having 3 singers and 4 songwriters, employing traditional and electronic instruments. Their sound is undefinable usually categorised as indie, alternative, rock, folk and experimental. The band's sound has always been eclectic owing to their vast influences ranging most music genres and need to experiment with sound.

Their first album, Bring It On, won the Mercury Music Prize in 1998 giving them much media attention in the UK and throughout the world. Later awards came from the NME and Q Magazine along with a Brit Awards nomination.

Gomez began their career on Hut records (Virgin) signing in 1997. Just before their 3rd album release In Our Gun Hut records was forced to downsize and on the following record Split the Difference, Hut records was disbanded by Virgin/EMI records. The band were dismayed by the music business and shocked by huge set backs they kept experiencing, that they decided to go it alone and asked Virgin records to let them go in 2004. The following year American label ATO signed the group releasing their first live album Out West and their most successful record stateside How We Operate and A New Tide.

Ian Ball, Ben Ottewell, Olly Peacock and Graham Pattison (engineer) created the Final Keep Me Up in 2009. They decided to record an album using only iPhones in the back lounge of the Tour Bus from Calais to Koln May 2nd 2009. The album exists only in streaming form.

HAYLEY FAYE (ACOUSTIC)
The Hayley Faye Band was established in 2007 and have been writing and performing at various venues in Manchester, London, and America. The band member’s include Singer/Songwriter Hayley Faye, Bass Player Andy Whittaker, and Drums&Percussion, Dan Lewis. In 2009 the band had great pleasure in supporting Badly Drawn Boy at The Ritz and playing at the GMEX for St Anne’s Hospice Midnight Walk, and later recorded a demo of their recent material ‘Let the Mermaids Find You’ and ‘Apple picking’. JACK AND EL
Jack and Elin met at a big band in their first year in university, but they thought better of it and decided to form their own band. Elin likes singing folk music but can belt out some soul when appropriate. Jack likes to jive that piano in a funk jazz fashion. They decided to fuse the art forms to create Jolk music.

PRIDE PARADE CLEARED FOR TAKE OFF WITH MANCHESTER AIRPORT
Manchester Airport is the latest organisation to sign-up for this year’s Manchester Pride Parade.

The airport’s employees are now busy creating their own take on the parade’s ‘Through the decades’ theme, which will make its way through the streets of the city centre on Saturday 28 August as part of the Big Weekend celebrations.
Daniel King, customer relations manager at Manchester Airport, said: “We’re pleased to announce that this year for the first time Manchester Airport will be taking part in the Pride 2010 Parade for what is expected to be a fantastic weekend. I don’t want to give away too much of what we will have on our float but prepare for the infamous chandeliers to make an appearance!”
Jackie Crozier, festival director of Manchester Pride, said: "With over 100 entries each year, the Manchester Pride Parade is one of the highlights of the Big Weekend and we're absolutely delighted that Manchester Airport is going to be a part of that.
“As a premier gay pride event in Europe we attract an international following and, with its large route network, the airport is a key asset for us. Each entry has its own take on the parade theme and I'm particularly looking forward to seeing what ideas the airport has up its sleeve."

Treating us to a cavalcade of Remixed Re-Edited and Re-Flexed jams live and direct to your face, they juice the party with their hottest tracks and those that have come to inspire.

In Flagranti are one of the most prolific producers, supplying a constant barrage of edits and original material that always features in our Dj Set. In 2009 “Brash and Vulgar”, and particularly “Business Acumen” were staple floor filling face meters and still sweep the room to devastating effect.

MANCHESTER PRIDE’S ‘NEXT TOP MODEL’ OPENS FOR APPLICATIONS

Manchester Pride has launched a new competition - Pride’s Next Top Model - which aims to find two models (one male and one female) who will appear in the festivals marketing campaign for 2011.

The competition is now open for applications and prizes include:

Two VIP passes to Manchester Pride’s Big Weekend.

The chance to be the face of Manchester Pride’s marketing campaign and Visit Manchester’s gay and lesbian campaign.

Winners will also receive copies of their photos for portfolio use.

Entries will be narrowed down to ten finalists and a panel of judges will select the winning pair. The judges are: Jackie Crozier (festival director of Manchester Pride), Andrew Stokes, (chairman of Manchester Pride), Rachel Joseph (celebrity photographer) and Anthony Crank (actor, broadcaster and DJ ).

Jackie Crozier, festival director of Manchester Pride, said: “This is the first time we’ve done a competition like this and we’re extremely excited about it. It’s a great opportunity for aspiring models to gain recognition and add to their portfolios. I would encourage anyone who is passionate about Pride and is interested in pursuing a career in modeling to apply.”

The competition runs from June 29 to August 15 2010. Application forms can be downloaded from www.manchesterpride.com.

Manchester Pride is Manchester's annual lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) festival which runs from Friday 20- Monday 30 August 2010.

With the first half of the year over in a flash we continue to pull out all the stops to make your night the best ever every Saturday at Mint Lounge. We really do thank every person that passes through our doors on the night.

As a weekly clubnight that prides itself on the standard of our resident DJs (many who have been with us from the start) we continually try to push the boundaries. So leading up to our 15th Birthday celebrations in November we are going to be throwing in a few surprises, all with a mancunia theme, after all we have a massive pool of musical talent in our fair city.

Mixing it up with El Diablos Neil Scott on the 17th we have a debut from Manchester XFM DJ Gareth Brooks, a DJ that we have been trying to book for some time, but a hectic DJ and Radio schedule has made this a real challenge for us. One of the best parties of the year so far was when Dave Haslam brought his Sweet Sensation night to Mint Lounge in May, litterally as soon as the night ended we was in talks with him to make it happen again, Saturday 24th July is the result.

If the MEN Arena and Wembley Stadium are a little too impersonal for your tastes then John Bishop’s forthcoming appearance in the cosier surroundings of The Blue Cat Cafe, Heaton Moor may well be more suited.

'John Bishop’s Britain' is a new BBC1 prime time comedy show fronted by the Scouse comic who has endeared himself to the nation with his smash hit tour ‘Elvis Has Left The Building’ (which also previewed at the Blue Cat) and numerous high profile TV appearances.

John will perform a stand-up set based on subjects such as parenthood, holidays, sport and family. He then gets feedback from the public and celebrity guests. The comic's home life, interests and recent meteoric rise to fame will all provide subject matter for the laughs.

FAIRY TALES FOR MANCHESTER PRIDE

As part of this year’s Manchester Pride Fringe, illustrator, Phil Corbett will present his collection, ‘Scary Mary’s Hairy Beary Fairy Tales’, of unusual characters from childhood fairy tales, between 19 August – 16 September. The collection is free of charge to view and will be displayed at Odder Bar (14 Oxford Road, Manchester).
Phil Corbett, who is best known for his quirky design for Aussie Bum, shows his collection of prints and paintings with illustrations including; ‘Scary Mary and her flock of sheep’, ‘The Three Bears’, ‘With Two Daddy Bears’, and ‘You won’t believe what happened to the Three Little Pigs’, amongst others.

Jackie Crozier, festival director for Manchester Pride, said; “We all grew up getting told about characters in fairy tales and they became so deeply embedded into our conscious that most people never think about questioning their stories. This show opens up the opportunities within the world of fairy tales and offers us all a chance to revisit our childhood.”
Phil Corbett said: “It's great to be involved in Manchester Pride, I was hankering for doing a mascot for the event but this will have to do. Maybe they'll let me do it next year! My characters fit firmly into the fun vibe of the event and as a Lancastrian myself; it's good to be working up north again.”
